Birdie 24-Hour Challenge
Birdie 24-Hour Challenge was first hosted in October 2025 in collabration with Shanghai YOUNG Theatre's Access Department, to raise public engagement and make contemporary theatre more accessible. To our surprise, the open call was received by feverish interests from the local community, with participants coming from all walks of life, including high school and university students, elderlies, amateur clubs, working professionals, families of children with special needs, documentary filmmakers, and so on. The initiative is now developing into a carefully curated full-package event that can be easily reproduced and adapted to different contexts.
How Does 24-Hour Challenge Work?
The rule is simple: in response to a set of given prompts (keywords, objects, subject-matters, etc.),
the competing teams have 24 hours to put together a 10-minute performance
which will be showcased to and voted by a public audience.
1Preparation & Open Call
In response to a particular space, text, theme or inquiry, we curate the prompts and workshops, and send out the OPEN CALL! Remember it is always good to have some diversity.
2Pre-Game Workshop
Prior to the actual game, we prep our first-time gamers with workshops, passing on handy tools for creations & collaborations. Also a great opportunity for bonding!
3Lucky Draw & Game Start
The competing teams draw their prompts and start making theatres! During the 24-hour, each team has one HELP card for technical or creative assistance.
4Tech & Show!
After the 24-hour, we showcase the pieces, and an informed audience votes their favorite pick! A talkback is hosted, followed by happy prizes, photos and parties!
